Terraform (IBM/HashiCorp)
Terraform (IBM/HashiCorp) — Infrastructure-as-code tool for provisioning cloud resources across AWS, Azure, GCP, and 300+ providers.
Our Verdict
Still the default IaC tool, but evaluate OpenTofu seriously given the licensing change.
Pros
- 300+ providers, covers nearly every cloud and SaaS
- Huge community and module ecosystem
- Declarative, idempotent infra model
- Skills transfer across companies and clouds
Cons
- BSL license move pushed community to OpenTofu
- State management is still the main foot-gun
- HCL gets ugly for complex logic
- Slow plans on large workspaces
Best for: Multi-cloud teams needing mature IaC with a massive provider and module ecosystem.
Not for: Teams already committed to CDK, Pulumi, or fully cloud-native IaC.
When to Use Terraform (IBM/HashiCorp)
Good fit if you need
- Infrastructure provisioning across 300+ cloud providers
