OpenGrok
OpenGrok — Fast, powerful source code search and cross-reference engine from Oracle for large codebases.
Our Verdict
Reliable old-guard code search that still works, but newer tools offer much better developer experience.
Pros
- Battle-tested source search at Oracle and other enterprises
- Good cross-referencing for static code navigation
- Supports many languages out of the box
- Fully self-hosted with no SaaS dependency
Cons
- Setup and reindexing is slow and operationally heavy
- UI and UX feel aged compared to Sourcegraph
- No AI features, purely lexical search and xref
- Community development has slowed significantly
Best for: Enterprises with air-gapped requirements and existing OpenGrok deployments
Not for: Teams starting fresh or expecting modern UI and AI-assisted navigation
