Launchpad
Launchpad — Canonical's code hosting and collaboration platform for Ubuntu and Linux OSS projects with PPA support.
Our Verdict
Essential if you ship Ubuntu PPAs, awkward and dated for anything else.
Pros
- PPA system is still unbeatable for Ubuntu distribution
- Integrated bug tracker, translations, code hosting
- Free for OSS with no vendor lock-in
- Native to Ubuntu, trusted by maintainers
Cons
- UI is straight out of 2008 and rarely updated
- Bazaar legacy means Git support is second-class
- Slow and confusing for newcomers
- Outside Ubuntu ecosystem, almost no one uses it
Best for: Ubuntu package maintainers and OSS projects tightly coupled to Canonical.
Not for: Modern Git-centric teams unrelated to Ubuntu.
When to Use Launchpad
Good fit if you need
- Ubuntu PPA hosting for custom deb package distribution
- Canonical-hosted CI builds for Linux OSS projects
- Bug tracker and merge proposals for Ubuntu packages
- Translation and documentation platform for OSS projects
